(Toccata and) Fugue in Dm (Bach), part II:Fugue – Ketil Strand-electric guitar/Axon guitar synth
Finally, here’s the Fugue part as a follow-up to my previous Toccata version played on Axon AX100 guitar synth. (I’ve also added a new Toccata version without the Axon, but with the Roland GR-100 instead).
In my first version of Toccata I used only the church organ sound from my Axon, but on the Fugue I’ve mixed the Axon sound with my good old Roland GR-100, one of Roland’s analog “guitar synth” units from the early 80′s. It doesn’t sound much like a synth, though, it’s basically a “hexaphonic fuzz”.. Both sounds were recorded simultaneously and mixed in Cubase, to make it sound like a “duet” for organ and guitar, and you can see me playing both tracks on the split screen.
I also added a third track on a few small sections where I found my piano sheet music version lacked something compared to the original organ version. (the piano version uses of course only two staffs/voices, the original organ version has three; left and right hand plus feet).
Of all my You tube videos, this has been my biggest challenge so far. It’s not the easiest piece of music to play on a guitar, so it took quite a few hours to learn, reading both treble and bass clefs from the sheet music..
Hope you enjoy it!
Additional pedals used: Electro-Harmonix Micro Pog, Boss DD-6 dig.delay, Boss RV-5 dig. reverb, Palmer PDI-09 The Junction guitar DI box.

Very well done, …
Very well done, most renditions i find of this piece are crap, but I love how you actually used the real music, and didn’t change it (to your extent that is, I’m sure for guitar, something had to be tweaked) but beautifully played. Great work!
Tusen takk! Det er …
Tusen takk! Det er nok sikkert andre gitarister som har spilt dette, men kanskje ikke akkurat på denne måten..

Thanks! Yeah, it …
Thanks! Yeah, it wasn’t easy, I spent many, many hours finishing this, but it was worth it..!
The synth sounds …
The synth sounds are created by the Axon AX100MKII. It first converts the guitar signal to MIDI and then you can use its built-in sounds. But you could also use the sounds from basically any other MIDI sound module. You’ll also need a special hexaphonic pickup (Roland GK-3 in my case) mounted on the guitar to be able to “translate” the guitar signal into midi.
Oh gosh. I was …
Oh gosh. I was searching for Toccata in D-minor and came across a guy playing it on guitar. I thought, “Wow sweet!” Then I was wondering if that you could play that, if you could play the fugue too. And all I can say is that’s very impressive. I wouldn’t even attempt to play any fugue on guitar. Especially Sebastian Bach..his pieces aren’t the easiest to play..
@nonstopunderground …
@nonstopunderground k, found that out by watching your other videos, but is the thing that creates the synth a thing in the guitar or a pedal?

Thanks. I’ll …
Thanks. I’ll recommend the Axon AX100 MKII of course.., but the Roland GR-20 is a bit cheaper. You could also just get a guitar-to-MIDI converter and use it with any midi sound module. if you’re planning to use it primarily with a computer and software, you could get the AXON AX50 USB, which is cheaper and has no on-board sounds. And of course, you’ll also need a hexaphonic pickup on your guitar (Roland GK or similar) or a synth-ready guitar like Godin, Brian Moore or Fender Roland Ready.
cool! damn, i’ll …
cool! damn, i’ll probably have to wait some time until i have the money to buy the necessary equipment to get such sounds out of my guitar… Can anybody suggest anything that has a good price-quality/capability relation? thnx !
