Ten Tips for a Successful Ezine
Here are ten easy tips to help ensure your ezine or business newsletter builds trust and confidence. Give them a try and see just how big a difference they can make!
Ezine Tip #1: Content, Content, Content
Learn to leave the hard sell at home. No one likes to subscribe to a newsletter only to be constantly pitched on a product or service. The focus of your newsletter MUST be helpful and relevant content.
Here are some ideas to get you going.
1. Explain to your reader how to do something. “How to” articles are a great way to demonstrate your expert knowledge and to build credibility among your readers.
2. Publish an interview with someone in your field that is considered an expert.
3. Write an article on an important business topic in your field.
4. Provide the results of polls or surveys that are relevant to your readers.
5. Publish question and answer topics. If one customer has a particular question, chances are others will have the same question.
6. Provide reviews on specific products and resources in your field.
I’m not saying you should never promote your own products and services. However, if you do, make sure these suggestions are woven around specific editorial content that is providing helpful information to your readers. Don’t overdo it. Remember, your reader signed up for your newsletter for content that will help them solve an issue. Make sure you overdeliver on that expectation.
Ezine Tip #2: Create a Newsletter Landing Page on Your Website
In addition to placing subscription boxes on your website, I recommend you create a special landing page that focuses on the benefits of your newsletter. Make sure you create a navigational link from your homepage to your newsletter landing page.
Here are some helpful content ideas for your newsletter landing page.
1. List the type of content visitors can expect with each issue.
2. List the benefits of subscribing.
3. Offer a few testimonials from actual subscribers.
4. Optional: Create an audio or video message about the benefits of signing up.
Ezine Tip #3: Offer an incentive for signing up
Offering an incentive to visitors is a great way to increase your newsletter signup rate. Here are some ideas inspire newsletter signups.
- Free demo
- Free service
- Free tip sheet
- Free informational CD, DVD, MP3
- Free sample
- Free shipping on next order
It’s always nice to provide something with instant gratification. That way, as soon as the visitor signs up, they are able to access whatever it is you’ve offered as the incentive. Experiment changing the offer from time to time to see how your newsletter signups are affected. Whatever it is you decide to provide as an incentive, make sure it has a high perceived value and state that value upfront (e.g., a $97 value!)
Ezine Tip #4: Design a Cover for Your Newsletter
Displaying a graphical ezine cover on your landing page will help evoke a sense of professionalism and trust. Keep your ezine cover simple and state the name of the ezine as well as a short tag line on the front.
Unless you have good design skills, I recommend you hire a professional designer for your ezine cover. If you need a recommendation on a ecover designer, take a look at Killer Covers. I’ve personally worked with them and have found them a great resource.
Ezine Tip #5: Include a Unique Recommendation
I like to include a small section at the end of my newsletter that gives a fun non-business recommendation. Obviously, I try to make it somewhat relevant but the point here is to point people to interesting stories, events, music, or blogs that might help enrich their lives. This can be a great way to make your newsletters a bit unique from your competition. However, don’t overdo it!
Ezine Tip #6: Test Your Newsletter Subject Lines
One of the first things your readers see when they get a new email is the subject line. Some people may not open an email if the subject line is boring or doesn’t appear relevant.
One great way to zero in on subject lines that get good open rates is to simply start testing. To do this, you split your recipient list into two equal but random sub lists. Send the same exact newsletter to both sub lists but split the subject lines. One will group get one subject line and the other group gets the second subject line. In a few days, you can compare statistics to see which subject line resulted in a higher open rate.
By testing subject lines on a regular basis, you will get a good feel for crafting interesting subject lines that get your readers to click. You can also test your newsletter content this way. This is helpful for when you want to test the appeal of one special offer against another.
Ezine Tip #7: Link Back to Your Website
One of the great uses of a newsletter is to generate enough interest to get people back to your website. Within the content of your ezine, think of ways to link back to more relevant content on your website. Link back to additional articles that provide more information or to specific resources on your site that you mentioned in the article.
Ezine Tip #8: Use It or Lose It
There’s no reason why all the good content you write for your newsletters has to be lost with each passing month. Instead, review your past newsletters and see if there is any content you can flesh out as additional content for your website.
In addition, you can also rework your main articles and submit them to article sites. This will help build your link popularity and help promote your business.
Ezine Tip #9: Multiple Subscription Boxes
Even with a dedicated landing page, you still should provide multiple subscription boxes on other pages of your site. My recommendation is to place a subscription box at the upper right or upper left of every single page. You never know where someone will enter your site or when someone will be ready to subscribe. Multiple subscription boxes make it easy for your visitors to register no matter what page they happen to be viewing.
Ezine Tip #10: Survey Your Readers
I recommend periodically surveying your readers. In your newsletter, place a link back to a survey on your website. If you don’t have the tools to create a survey on your website, use an external service like Survey Monkey. You don’t need to do this more than once or twice a year.
I recommend you also provide some type of incentive for completing the survey. Surveying your newsletter readers is a great way to help determine the type of content THEY want to see. It’s easy to assume you know what your customers want to read about, but the only accurate way to really know is to simply ask.
Here are some good survey topics.
1. Ask about the relevancy of the newsletter.
2. Ask about the frequency. Should it be more/less frequent?
3. Ask about the quality of the writing and the general layout.
4. Ask about the usefulness of the information provided.
5. Ask them for specific article topics they would like to see in future issues.
6. Ask if there is any regular content that they would like to see removed.
7. Ask them to rate their overall satisfaction level of the newsletter.
8. Ask them if they have any ideas for improvement.

The Silly and Sometimes Amusing Sound of the Slide Whistle
Most people are familiar with the slide whistle, but do not often view it as an instrument that is to be played for the same reasons that someone would pick up the saxophone or violin to play. It is a great little instrument that most will use as a sound effect, or to use in adding something into a piece of music they are playing. Also known as the swanee whistle or the piston flute, the slide whistle has a simple design. It is a tube with a fipple in it, like the recorder or the win whistle has, and has a piston that fits within the tube. By moving this piston up and down, the musician can create different sounds.
The slide whistle is a member of the woodwind instrument family and creates a different pitch as the musician blows into it and moves the piston to a different position within the tube. As mentioned before, it is most often used as a sound effect, either in different musical situations, or in a cartoon to emphasize something that is happening. What most people don’t realize is that it is actually possible to play some tunes on the slide whistle. It can create different sounds after all.
It is not an exceptionally old form of whistle. In fact, it is a fairly new instrument that became extremely popular in the early twentieth century. It was a common instrument to be used in jazz and other popular music of the times. It even continues to find a place in today’s music on occasion, though cartoons or comedies will tend to have it more often.
The slide whistle can be manipulated in such a way as to create different melodies, but it does take someone with a certain amount of talent and practice to do this. It can be difficult to create these melodies because there are no marks on where to have the piston in order to create the different notes, and there is no sheet music for the slide whistle in order to create music. It takes someone with an imagination and with the ability to create music in order to use the slide whistle in this manner. This is not to say that only a select number of special people through out the world are the only ones that can do this. Anyone can give it a try and might be successful at it.
While it is not an instrument that someone would choose to play as their main instrument throughout their musical career, it can be a great instrument to play for fun on free time. The different sounds that it can make do vary quite a bit and someone could easily come up with something unique that might interest others. It could easily be a great background instrument in different tunes, but it does depend on what is being played. It is certainly not limited to any specific genres and can be a versatile instrument if necessary.

The US Government is not an Independent Self Funded Entity – Regardless of How the 535 Members of Congress are Acting
by G. Hugh Bodell
Over the past few months, as a result of conversations with friends, relatives, colleagues and acquaintances I have come to a startling but more importantly a scary conclusion. There appears to be a perception that the US Government has funds that either were in storage or will emerge from some private stash to rescue everyone or entity in financial trouble.
This commentary is truly intended to be a non-partisan piece. My concern is not that any one group is the cause or will be the cure of our current economic woes. My objective is to address an apparent disconnect between the 306 million citizens of this great country and the trillions of dollars being spent or committed by an assemblage of 535 out of control middle men and woman, some call congress, I call self appointed loan brokers.
First, let me make one statement that is the corner stone of my commentary today. Regardless of the economic system under which one lives, capitalism, modified capitalism/socialism or full-blown socialism the only source of asset creation is the people. Not financial enterprises, not industrial enterprises, not service enterprises and definitely not government.
Every asset in the economic infrastructure of our country starts with the effort of the individual and the remuneration that individual receives for that effort.
The Big Three auto manufacturers need money because the individuals who would normally be inclined to buy one of their vehicles are either not so inclined or do not have nor cannot raise the required cash.
The taxes these three behemoths would normally pay to various tiers of government will not be paid because they have not made any profit because people, individuals are not buying their product.
Construction enterprises will not buy trucks because their product, buildings, have no buyers because once again, individuals who would normally be inclined to buy their buildings are either not so inclined or do not have nor cannot raise the required cash.
Thus, if Charlie or Charlene citizen does not spend, regardless of what they are not buying, profit is not made and taxes are not paid.
If taxes are not paid, this amorphous body referred to as government has no money to support their endless bailouts.
Where are they getting it, they are borrowing it and putting the loan on the balance sheet of each and every living soul in the United States.
That’s right, you owe the money that the 535 loan brokers are borrowing to bailout banks, brokerage houses, auto manufacturers and whoever gets on the line next.
I truly believe that if the American public began to view government spending at a more personal level, these out of control loan brokers called Congress would find themselves in the hot water they deserve. So what I am going to attempt to do here is ‘make it personal’. Keep in mind through this exercise that the only tax dollars that the US Treasury will get with which to pay off the debts enumerated below must ultimately be paid by the individual, whether income, sales, property, etc, the source is the working men and woman of this country, enterprises are only conduits through which the money passes.
Let’s start with what is owed from past spending binges As of December 23, 2008 the national debt is approximately $10.612 trillion
To see that number in its scary entirety $10,611,615,687,668
Now let’s add to that the bailout money that is not included in the above, and let’s round it to where it really is going $1.000 trillion
Therefore as of today, the 535 loan brokers have committed your future earnings to pay back $11.612 trillion
Now lets add President Elect Obama’s estimate of what further bailout/stimulus needs the government will borrow $3.000 trillion
So sometime between now and summer 2009 the citizens of this great country will owe various lenders throughout the world $14.612 trillion
The population of this country as of today is approximately 306,000,000
Therefore every man, woman and child, from sea to shining sea will owe $47,751.63
To bring that number even closer to home, the average US household has 2.59 souls in it, so according to the US Census Bureau, the average family/household will be in the hole for $123,676.73 by summer, and you didn’t get anything for that 123 grand, hell, you didn’t even know you owed it.
It is imperative that you think about this number in these term because you are going to pay it back.
We have already established that any tax money the US Treasury receives from business enterprises ultimately comes from each individual, well so do the tax dollars that are paid by the rich. Those among the rich that enjoy a life supported by dividends…those dividends are just another distribution of the profits earned by selling you, the individual, products or services. Equally so with entertainers, sports celebrities, business owners, etc., if you do not buy their music, go to their games or buy their goods and services, they just ain’t rich anymore so they do not pay enormous taxes.
Harry Truman once said about his job as President of the United States, “The buck stops here”. Well each citizen of the United States must look at the huge commitments that the 535 loan brokers are making with your money, assets and yes, your future and realize ‘The buck starts here’.
I would truly feel that this commentary was a success if people that read it start his or her own chart for their specific household. Using the $11.612 trillion that we have already been made responsible for and the total population of the US as of today, each soul is responsible for $37,947.71 of debt the 535 loan brokers committed you to. Each time you hear of the loan brokers committing you to another trillion, divide by that population number, 306 million, add it to the $37,947.71 and multiply it by the number of people in your household.
That way most of the honest, hardworking folk who built this nation can go to sleep every night saying to themselves, “My biggest creditor is a group of incompetent slugs who made me responsible for a loan without my consent, gave me nothing in return and have the government on their side to make me pay it back. I am in this fix because 535 incompetent, self appointed loan brokers signed my name to the loan agreement, not theirs, mine.”
Then vote them out of office before they bankrupt you, all 535 of them!

The Irish Melodies on the Tin Whistle
The tin whistle is a type of flute that belongs to the woodwind instrument family, though it is often called a wind instrument or an aerophone. Its appearance is quite similar to that of the recorder, but there is little mistake that this is a different instrument altogether.
Like the fife, this particular instrument is constructed with six holes bored into the tube that are covered by the musician’s fingers at different times when a different sound is required. It is known by a few other names besides the tin whistle, such as the pennywhistle or the Irish whistle and is known as an end blown fipple flute, because of the long hole that is present on the top of the mouthpiece, just below where the musician blows into the whistle.
While there does not appear to be a specific date on which this particular flute was created, which is the case with many musical instruments, the oldest whistles have been dated back to the 1100s. Though the tin whistle could have existed as far back as the 12 century, it was most noticed in the 16 century. In fact, it was during this time that the tin whistle earned its other name; penny whistle.
Apparently, the tin whistle was quite popular among the poor around this time and earned its title because the beggars would play this instrument on the street for money. The term that this particular instrument is best known by is actually a newer term than “penny” whistle. The term “tin whistle” appears to have only started being used in the early 1900s. This type of whistle also comes in different sizes. The smaller tin whistles will often have a higher sound, while the tin whistles that are larger in size will often have a lower sound than the smaller ones.
Regardless of the size, the whistles are made in such a way that they do not need to be tuned, much like the recorder. It is a simply made instrument that changes its sound when the musician covers different holes. For anyone who is new to music, this is probably one of the best instruments to learn how to play. It allows for someone to easily grasp how to play the instrument as well as to learn how to read sheet music at the same time.
This particular instrument is also relatively inexpensive to acquire, probably because of its simple design and build. It, like the recorder, is an instrument that can be great for someone who wants to get into playing any type of wind instrument. It calls for some discipline in a person’s ability to control the amount of air they blow into the whistle and it gets a new musician used to the different combination of covering holes in order to create the right notes. It is also a great instrument for anyone who wishes to pick something up as a hobby. It is not an overly demanding instrument and can be quite enjoyable and relaxing to play on free time.

I am in this fix because 535 incompetent, self appointed loan brokers signed my name to the loan agreement, not theirs, mine.”
Then vote them out of office before they bankrupt you, all 535 of them!
